How do I Participate?Simply by being a guest of Bitter End (staying in a resort room), you are qualified to participate. Either in advance, or upon arrival, identify yourself as interested in participating, and we will take it from there!
Do I have to sign up for activities in advance? No, you can wait until you arrive at the resort. Most of the sign-ups take place at the Welcome Harbor Cruise on Saturday evening.
How are skippers and crews assigned?By way of a crew experience resume, which also contains skipper preferences, and time slots preferred. After all, one is also on vacation, and may want to go SCUBA diving, or have SPA treatments! Nah… The sailing is way too much fun.
What if I’m A Beginner—will I be overwhelmed? You can participate as much or as little as you like, and can even drop out part way through (though no one ever has). Typically, each crew has a comfortable mix of beginners, intermediates, and experts, plus the skipper.
My Wife’s A Racer, but I’m Not: Will I be bored? Not at all. There are a variety of ways to participate that do not include racing. One can spectate and cheer on your spouse’s team, or simply chill out on the beach, go snorkeling, scuba diving, or even better, go to sailing school, so next year you are ready to participate. And when the day is done, there are great social activities to participate in.
Can I come for just a couple days?Certainly. But to really enjoy the Pro Am, one should try to experience the entire week. But if only a few days are in the cards, one will want to look at the schedule and decide what days make the most sense, to maximize one’s experience. For instance, Thursday and Friday are best for the really keen, high-octane racers, while Monday and Tuesday are a little more low key.
Can Yacht Club groups get involved?Absolutely. Over the years, we’ve had contingents from various Yacht Clubs: San Diego Yacht Club, Arizona Yacht Club, Royal Southern Yacht Club, Royal Thames Yacht Club, and even the President’s Club of US Sailing. It’s a great event for socially-oriented clubs to use as a Winter outing. And groups of 10 rooms or more typically get preferred pricing.
What are the Costs: How do I Book? And the best news: There is no additional cost for participating in the Pro Am Regatta. One simply books the Bitter End’s signature Admiral’s Package (or Daily Rate Package), either via the on-line booking engine, or by calling a Bitter End travel planner at 800-872-2392.
