2012 Dates: July 30- August 2!
No fish tales are necessary when it comes to billfishing in the BVI. Now in its fourth year, the BVI Billfishing Tournament at Bitter End regularly draws both serious fisherfolk from around the US and Caribbean, and fish, based on the daily tallies.
The fishing takes place at the North Drop, in an area ranging just 13-30 miles from Bitter End. Competitors take off early each morning, fish all day and return to the resort for virtual weigh in -- because it is a catch and release tournament, the fish stats are recorded at sea -- and evenings of relaxing social events, hosted by the event's sponsors, who also provide great prizes!
Taking advantage of the first of two full moons in August (on August 1) 2012, Anglers are treated to three great days of fishing and terrific parties ashore during the BVI Billfish Tournament.
After days of serious fishing, sponsors host evening cocktail parties with special concoctions developed by their CCOs (Chief Cocktail Officers), providing welcome cheer for the evenings ashore, including the awards party on the last night. Cocktails are followed by great dinners overlooking North Sound.
In 2011, Team Therapy (George Lawton. Tampa, FL) walked away with the top honors, followed by Team Black Gold (Harry Sargeant, Boca Raton, FL) and Team Yannalao (J-M Greaux, St. Barths).
“I’ve been to this event from the beginning, and this year’s was extra special,” said Therapy’s George Lorton. “My grandson hooked the second blue marlin of his life and it was our first fish of the tournament.”
“While I chartered a boat this year, “said Doug Fabick (Fenton, MO),” I plan to return with my own next year. The new docks were terrific and the place was awesome. Great food, fun and staff that aims to please.”
“We’re committed to making the Billfish Tournament a cornerstone event, along with the Pro Am Sailing Regatta in the Fall and the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival. We have some of the world’s finest fishing off the North Drop and want more anglers to come discover it,” said Sandra Graham, COO of the Bitter End.
