About Virgin Gorda, BVI

Bitter End Yacht Club is on the North Sound of Virgin Gorda in the beautiful British Virgin Islands. Virgin Gorda is the second largest island in the BVI and spans 15 square miles of mountains, boulders and spectacular beaches. Fronting the island’s protected North Sound and idyllic Statia Sound, Bitter End is 12 miles from Tortola, 30 miles from St. Thomas and 75 miles from Puerto Rico. Virgin Gorda is consistently ranked among the top Caribbean islands by publications such as Conde Nast Traveler and Travel & Leisure.

Comfortably nestled into 75 acres of land and more than a mile of waterfront on the northeast extremity of Virgin Gorda, Bitter End is accessible only by water and is the last island outpost before the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Its curved strand of waterfront includes three white sand beaches, deep, crystal-clear water, and abundant fish and bird life. North Sound, filled with beautiful coral reefs, colorful sponges, and an unmatched variety of brilliant fish, including wrasses, grunts, damselfish and parrotfish, offers spectacular snorkeling sites. Constant tradewinds provide a humidity-free, naturally air conditioned climate.

A British Crown Territory, the British Virgin Islands are part of the Greater Antilles, a string of more than 60 islands, rocks and cays bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. Except for Anegada, which is of coral formation, the British Virgin Islands were created by hot volcanic material that rose slowly upward out of the seabed some 70-100 million years ago. As recently as the last ice age (15,000 years ago), when the sea level was 300 feet lower, the islands were connected by land to Puerto Rico and the U.S Virgin Islands. Today, they stand as peaks of a drowned mountain range.
